The Architectural Anatomy of Modulnova: Engineering Beyond Design

How the Kitchen Became the Heart of the Modern Home

In the contemporary interior, the kitchen has long ceased to be merely a functional zone. Today, it is the center of the home, its energetic core and visual focal point. It is the kitchen that sets the pace of the space and defines the overall quality of life.

At the forefront of this transformation stands the Italian brand Modulnova. The company views the kitchen as an architectural system. Solomia Home utilizes Modulnova solutions as the foundation for creating interiors where furniture becomes an integral part of the architecture, rather than a standalone object.

From Family Craft to Global Brand

The history of Modulnova is rooted in craftsmanship. The Presotto family began working with wood in the 1940s, gaining a profound understanding of materials that technology alone cannot replicate. In 1988, the Presotto brothers founded Modulnova with the goal of creating kitchens that adapt to both the individual and the home's architecture. The brand’s name refers to a system of proportions based on the human body, embodying a philosophy of "tailoring" where every element is "made to measure."

An Architectural Philosophy: "Subtle Intelligence"

At the heart of the Modulnova concept is the rejection of the purely decorative. Here, design is structure. To achieve this "silence of form," Modulnova utilizes engineering feats often hidden from the naked eye:

  • Aerospace Heritage: To create the signature 6-meter-high doors that remain perfectly stable, the brand borrowed aluminum honeycomb technology from the aerospace industry. This provides maximum rigidity with minimal weight.

  • Folding Technique: For a seamless visual monolith, Modulnova uses precision folding. Edges are mitered at 45°, allowing stone or wood veneers to wrap continuously from the face to the edge, creating the illusion of a solid block of material.

Materials as Architectural Tools

Modulnova works with materials traditionally used in heavy construction, re-engineering them for the domestic scale. These surfaces maintain a sense of monolithic solidity, transforming the kitchen into a long-term investment in living standards.

1. Sintered Intelligence: Kerlite

Kerlite represents a significant evolution in architectural surfaces, functioning as an ultra-thin "skin" of just 3.5 mm reinforced with a high-performance fiberglass mesh. From an engineering standpoint, its remarkably low weight of 7.8 kg/m²—a fraction of the 40 kg/m² found in traditional porcelain—enables the creation of massive, lightweight facades that minimize structural load. Beyond its physical agility, Kerlite leads in ethics and hygiene; it is the first surface to achieve 100% CO2 neutrality across its entire life cycle. Furthermore, it integrates Protect® technology, a silver-ion-based antibacterial system that actively eliminates 99.9% of bacteria 24/7, ensuring continuous sanitation without the need for UV light activation.

2. Piasentina Stone: Geological Memory

Piasentina Stone, famously known as "the stone that pleases" (una pietra che la piase), is a rare limestone breccia with a lineage dating back 145 million years. This material carries a profound architectural heritage, having served as a cornerstone for Roman builders in the city of Forum Iulii and later becoming a preferred medium for the Renaissance master Andrea Palladio. Its distinct aesthetic character is defined by its chemistry: the signature reddish veins are formed by FeCO3 (iron carbonate) inclusions embedded within the rock. Today, Modulnova honors this deep geological history by marrying ancient legacy with modern precision cutting, transforming raw prehistoric memory into sophisticated contemporary design.

3. The Alchemy of Cementoresina

Cementoresina is a sophisticated multi-layered system that achieves a remarkable Shore D hardness of 82 despite being only 3 mm thick. A vital engineering feat of this material is its high degree of vapor permeability; while the surface is entirely waterproof, it remains "breathable." This unique property prevents moisture from becoming trapped behind facades, ensuring long-term structural integrity and preventing mold growth in high-humidity kitchen environments.

4. Liquid Metal

By blending real metal dust with specialized binders, Modulnova creates surfaces with the visual weight of a solid cast ingot. This technique allows for a cold, industrial aesthetic that remains warm and tactile to the touch.

Signature Collections

Blade: The symbol of the brand’s audacity. These 10 mm facades create the effect of a single architectural surface, made possible by the Blade Lab technique of bonding ultra-thin stone or metal to aluminum cores.

Twenty: This collection works with volume and light. Here, the Vertical Groove system hides LED lighting within a 5-centimeter door protrusion, turning a simple cabinet into a dynamic light installation that emphasizes the mineral textures of the stone.

Skill: Represents intelligent minimalism. Thin lines, hidden storage zones, and integrated appliances transform the working area into an elegant furniture object.

The Role of Solomia Home

Solomia Home acts not just as a supplier, but as Modulnova’s architectural partner. The company manages full-cycle projects, from the initial concept to the final interior fit-out. In a world where luxury is defined by the "silence of form," Modulnova sets the standard for the housing of the future. The Solomia Home team translates this design language into reality.
