A New Outdoor Philosophy: Furniture Built for Climate, Not for Show

At Solomia Home, we see this shift in almost every project we take on. Just a few years ago, a terrace or garden was treated as an afterthought, furnished with whatever piece from the living room wasn’t precious enough to risk in the rain. Today the line between indoors and outdoors has all but disappeared, and we witness it firsthand in every villa and residence we design, from Dubai to the wider region.

Why Outdoor Stopped Being a Compromise
Working closely with brands such as Versace Home, Baxter, Flexform, and B&B Italia, we’ve seen how Italian manufacturers have moved away from treating outdoor furniture as an afterthought. Today’s outdoor collections are conceived as statements in their own right, with their own architecture, proportions, and character, drawing on the Mediterranean coastline, the villas of Liguria and Puglia, and the resort aesthetic of Sardinia.

Baxter’s open-air collection, showcased in its Outdoor Gallery in Milan, captures this philosophy particularly well. Many of its pieces are the work of designer Paola Navone, who pairs Baxter’s signature soft leather with materials drawn from the world outside: cane, African wood, lava stone. In her own words, the new collection is an invitation to the pleasure of an open-air siesta. That is precisely the mood we aim to bring to our clients when we design outdoor living areas on terraces and in gardens.

Materials That Don’t Fear the Climate
In our projects, we choose materials tested by both Mediterranean and Gulf conditions: sun, salt, and shifting humidity alike.

• Teak: a dense wood that weathers into a noble grey patina and holds up well to humidity
• Woven marine-grade cord and technical rattan: resistant to UV and rain, while keeping a handcrafted, tactile texture
• Powder-coated aluminium: a lightweight, corrosion-free frame suited to large modular systems
• Natural stone and porcelain stoneware: durable tabletops for fire features or poolside settings
• Technical fabrics: resistant to salt and sun, yet indistinguishable in look and feel from indoor upholstery
This is why the pieces we select for our clients’ terraces and gardens increasingly find their way into city living rooms too, without ever losing their sense of elegance.

Our Approach at the Dubai Mall Showroom
When we opened the Versace Home showroom in Dubai Mall, we deliberately dedicated an entire upper floor to outdoor collections, to make the point that, for us, outdoor furniture holds the same status as furniture for the home. As Solomia Home’s creative designer and co-owner Svitlana Antonovych puts it, every zone of the showroom, from the living spaces to the bedrooms, is meant to reveal the full scale and versatility of Italian design, and the open-air spaces are no exception; they’re part of the same lifestyle narrative.

Outdoor as a Way of Life, Not a Seasonal Feature

Across our projects, we’re increasingly designing outdoor areas as complete living systems: open-air kitchens, modular cooking islands, compact canopied beds, spaces built for evening gatherings. For villas and residences, this is no longer a seasonal add-on but part of the home’s architecture, on equal footing with the living room or dining room.
We believe the terrace should no longer be the place where old furniture goes to retire. Together with our partners, Versace Home, Baxter, Flexform, and B&B Italia, we create spaces for our clients where the outdoors becomes a genuine extension of the home: full of character, with no compromise on quality or design.
