Story

Milestones

1966

Founded as C&B Italia

Piero Ambrogio Busnelli founds the company in joint venture with Cesare Cassina under the name C&B Italia, in Novedrate (Como), Italy. The new venture introduces cold-moulded polyurethane foam to the home-furniture sector.

1966

Coronado by Afra & Tobia Scarpa

Afra and Tobia Scarpa's Coronado is launched in the founding year — an iron frame matched with cold-moulded polyurethane foam, signature of the new manufacturing approach.

1969

UP series — an icon of modernity

Gaetano Pesce's UP series is launched: the first armchair born to be shipped flat in a vacuum-packed box. UP5_6 becomes one of the brand's signature pieces.

1970

Original launch under C&B Italia

Camaleonda is presented by C&B Italia (the joint venture between Cassina and Busnelli that becomes B&B Italia in 1973). Bellini coins the name from the Italian camaleonte (chameleon) and onda (wave); the cable-hook-and-ring connection system that defines the silhouette is introduced.

1972

Novedrate headquarters by Piano + Rogers

B&B Italia's purpose-built headquarters open in Novedrate, designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers on a free-plan, expandable modular structure — a full-scale prototype of ideas the architects later realised at the Centre Pompidou.

1972

Le Bambole by Mario Bellini

Bellini's Le Bambole sofa series is launched — a metal frame wrapped in generous polyurethane padding that eliminates the rigid silhouette. It will go on to win the Compasso d'Oro in 1979.

1972

Bellini at MoMA — Kar-a-sutra

Bellini contributes Kar-a-sutra — a "mobile human space" exploration car sponsored by Cassina, C&B Italia, Citroën and Pirelli — to the seminal MoMA exhibition Italy: The New Domestic Landscape (curated by Emilio Ambasz, 23 May – 11 September 1972). The same exhibition that put Italian design on the global map.

1973

C&B becomes B&B Italia

Busnelli purchases Cassina out of the joint venture; the company is renamed B&B Italia and inaugurates its new Piano + Rogers headquarters.

1975

Maxalto established

B&B Italia launches Maxalto as its high-end subsidiary line, focused on cabinetry and case goods.

1976

First New York monobrand store

B&B Italia opens its first standalone international flagship in New York.

1978

Contract Division established

B&B Italia formalises its contract arm to serve hospitality, office, and large-scale commercial interiors.

1979

Le Bambole wins Compasso d'Oro; Japan opens

Bellini's 1972 Le Bambole receives the Compasso d'Oro, and B&B Italia opens its first Japanese subsidiary.

1979

End of original production

B&B Italia completes the original Camaleonda production run.

1989

First company-level Compasso d'Oro

B&B Italia becomes the first company to receive a Compasso d'Oro awarded directly to a design-manufacturing entity.

2020

Reissued after 50 years

Bellini and B&B Italia collaborate on the reissue. Bellini on revisiting the design: "When I was asked to update Camaleonda — it was immediately clear to me that I should never or would never be able to do anything. Change the shape? No, the way it was intended is as good today as it was then." The 1970 cutting patterns and cable-hook-ring system are preserved; the internal structure is rebuilt as a sandwich of disassemblable, recycled or recyclable materials.

2022

Serie UP wins XXVII Compasso d'Oro

Gaetano Pesce's Serie UP is recognised with the XXVII Compasso d'Oro ADI — more than half a century after its 1969 launch.

2023

Stella McCartney capsule

The Camaleonda × Stella McCartney capsule is launched at Art Basel Miami Beach on 6 December 2023, introducing the S-Wave fabric (OceanSafe naNea yarn, Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold).

“Of all the objects I have designed, Camaleonda is perhaps the best in terms of its sense of freedom. There are infinite number of possible configurations.”
— Mario Bellini
Inside

Construction

Wood-fibre core (MDF NAF)

The structural core is built from MDF NAF wood-fibre panels — a no-added-formaldehyde board — assembled into a sandwich of disassemblable layers.

Layered polyurethane padding

The cushions use polyurethane foam in varied densities, producing the cascading, springy seat that defines the piece. The back and armrests pair shaped polyurethane with foam for a denser support.

Recycled-PET cover

A removable cover woven from 100% recycled polyester fibre — a Dacron made entirely from recycled PET, the material of plastic water bottles.

FSC®-certified beech feet

Spherical feet turned from FSC-certified beech (natural beech finish, code 0441F) with plastic ferrules. Foot height is offered in 5 cm or 8 cm.

Cable-hook-and-ring system

Modules connect through Bellini's original 1970 system: brass rings, stainless-steel carabiners and polypropylene cord. No tools needed to reconfigure.

Fully removable upholstery

Fabric or leather covers are entirely removable — pieces can be re-upholstered without altering the underlying frame. B&B Italia warrants the piece for 26 months from the date of manufacture.

"I have loved Mario Bellini's designs for years, and I cannot put into words how thrilled I am to see my prints on his pieces once again. The S-Wave is a symbol of our Stella commitments to circularity and conscious luxury." — Stella McCartney, December 2023.
