Roche Bobois
company history

The story of Roche Bobois is a captivating saga of two families whose meeting forever altered the landscape of global design. It all began in 1960 in Paris, when representatives of two furniture dynasties—Philippe and François Roche on one side, and Jean-Claude and Patrick Chouchan on the other—crossed paths by chance at a trade fair in Copenhagen. At the time, the Roche family owned a prestigious store in an old Parisian theater building, while the Chouchans managed the successful "Au Beau Bois" salon. Discovering a shared passion for Scandinavian modernism and the avant-garde, they decided to leave competition behind and merge their names into a single brand that has since become a symbol of innovation.

In the 1970s, the brand sparked a true revolution in home organization. It was then, in 1971, that designer Hans Hopfer created the legendary Mah Jong sofa for Roche Bobois. This modular system, which allowed for the free combination of elements at floor level, shattered traditional notions of furniture and introduced the trend of the "free-living" concept. This success propelled Roche Bobois onto the international stage, with the opening of flagship showrooms in New York and London, laying the foundation for the company’s transformation into a global network representing the French "Art de Vivre" in over 50 countries.

Throughout the decades, Roche Bobois has solidified its status as a creative trendsetter, transforming furniture into objects of haute couture. The brand’s strategy is built on a continuous dialogue between industrial production and fine art: the company refreshes its collections every six months, collaborating with legendary couturiers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Kenzo Takada, and Christian Lacroix. Today, while remaining true to its roots, Roche Bobois continues to pioneer principles of eco-design and innovative technology, proving that luxury can be responsible and that a family’s history can become a global legacy of aesthetic and functional progress.
