Milestones

1978

Gianni Versace founds the fashion house

Gianni Versace, born 1946 in Reggio Calabria, opens his first boutique on Via della Spiga in Milan and presents his debut collection at La Permanente in March. The original company, registered as Gianni Versace Donna, will grow into the global luxury house headquartered today at Piazza Luigi Einaudi 4, Milan.

1982

Move into housewares

Versace expands beyond fashion into jewellery, china and textiles for the home — the first foothold of what will later be formalised as Versace Home.

1988

The Greca (Greek Key) motif debuts

Gianni Versace introduces the Greek Key in the Fall-Winter 1988 ready-to-wear collection. Decades later, La Greca returns as a defining pattern across Versace Home upholstery and bed linen.

1989

Atelier Versace haute couture

The Atelier Versace haute couture line is launched, presented for the first time in Paris.

1992

Versace Home interiors launch

Versace becomes one of the first fashion houses to launch a dedicated home-interiors line — beginning with textiles and quickly expanding to porcelain tableware through a partnership with the German manufacturer Rosenthal that is still running today.

1994

Vanitas chair

The wooden Vanitas chair, the earliest dated piece in the Versace Home furniture canon, debuts. It will be re-upholstered in velvet and re-presented at Salone del Mobile 2025.

1997

Gianni Versace assassinated; Donatella becomes Creative Director

Gianni Versace is murdered outside his Miami Beach home, Casa Casuarina, on 15 July 1997. His sister Donatella Versace, who had been Vice President since 1978, becomes Creative Director — a role she will hold until 2025.

2014

Blackstone takes a minority stake

Blackstone purchases a 20% stake in Versace for €210 million — the brand's first non-family ownership.

2019

Capri Holdings acquires Versace

On 2 January 2019, Capri Holdings (the former Michael Kors group) closes its acquisition of Versace for approximately US$2.1 billion.

2020

Versace Home furniture licensed to Lifestyle Design Group

Versace signs a licence with Lifestyle Design Group — the Italian home-design division of US-based Haworth Group — for the production and distribution of Versace Home furniture. The licence covers furniture only; textiles and accessories remain in-house, ceramics continue under Rosenthal, and wallpaper and floor tiles stay with their respective licensees.

2023

Rosenthal × Versace turns 30

The Rosenthal × Versace partnership marks 30 years with a limited mug collection that revives a 1993 design — gold-toned Barocco motifs paired with a Medusa lid.

2024

"If These Walls Could Talk" at Palazzo Versace

Salone del Mobile installation at the brand's original Milan atelier on Via Gesù 12 debuts the Medusa '95 Conversation Sofa, La Greca Bed, Lady Desk, and Moon Island sofa and armchair.

2025

Prada Group acquires Versace

Announced 10 April 2025 and closed 2 December 2025: Prada Group acquires Versace from Capri Holdings for €1.25 billion (~US$1.375 billion). The same year Donatella Versace steps down as Chief Creative Officer (effective 12 March) and becomes Chief Brand Ambassador (1 April); Dario Vitale is appointed Chief Creative Officer.

Inside

Construction

Tubular varnished steel base, polished gold

The base is a tubular varnished-steel column with a polished Gold finishing. Mirror-grade gold rather than satin or brushed — choose this family when the room already runs warm hardware (Medusa-medallion accessories, gold-base armchairs).

Steel top — La Greca or Medusa Amplified motif

The defining feature: "the top tray is a celebration of the brand's stylistic verve, featuring the La Greca motif or Medusa Amplified motif, available in multiple colours" — the manufacturer's own framing. The top is steel (not glass, marble, or wood); the motif sits as a graphic field across the full diameter.

Round only — three diameters

All three sizes are round, no square or rectangular variant published. The diameters step in 11–18 cm increments (Ø 37, Ø 48, Ø 66) with varying heights — the smallest is the tallest at 45 cm, the largest is the lowest at 35 cm. Designed to nest as a stepped trio, not as identical replicas.

Stepped-height nesting set

Heights run inverse to diameter — the small Ø 37 stands at 45 H, the medium Ø 48 at 40 H, the large Ø 66 at 35 H. Group the three together for a stepped composition where the small reads above the large; or split them across a seating group as graphic accent pieces in proportion to each chair.

Stepped trio with motif tops

Stepped trio with motif tops

All three sizes shown together — small, medium, large — with their motif tops visible. The motif (either La Greca Greek-key or Medusa Amplified) is the family's design feature; the gold base is the constant. The tops can be specified in different motifs across the trio, so the set reads as a graphic series rather than three identical replicas.

Modules

Small — Ø 37 × 45 H cm

Small — Ø 37 × 45 H cm

Ø 37 × 45 H cm

Smallest in the family — and tallest. The 45 cm overall height puts the top at standard side-table register, taller than typical coffee-table height — drink-and-book level next to a sofa rather than a true lounge coffee table. Place it close to the sitter as a personal surface.

Medium — Ø 48 × 40 H cm

Medium — Ø 48 × 40 H cm

Ø 48 × 40 H cm

The middle size. At 40 cm overall it lands at lounge-coffee height; at Ø 48 it carries enough surface for a tray and a couple of objects. The middle of the stepped trio when the three are grouped, or a stand-alone coffee accent in a smaller seating arrangement.

Large — Ø 66 × 35 H cm

Large — Ø 66 × 35 H cm

Ø 66 × 35 H cm

Largest and lowest in the family. The 35 cm overall height is true low-coffee register — designed to anchor a primary seating group. At Ø 66 the motif top reads as a graphic centrepiece rather than a small accent, so this size warrants the bolder Medusa Amplified rather than the more discreet La Greca.

FAQ

Frequently asked

No — different family, different design language. Medusa '95 is a Salone-2024 limited-edition family with its own Iconic-round geometry. This is the La Medusa family — a separate, longer-running collection where the design feature is the motif printed on a steel top (La Greca or Medusa Amplified), and the base is a polished-gold column rather than the Iconic-round shape. Don't conflate the two.

As a stepped trio. Heights run inverse to diameter (Ø 37 / 45 H, Ø 48 / 40 H, Ø 66 / 35 H) — group all three for a graphic stepped composition where the small stands above the large. Or split them: the large (35 cm) anchors a primary seating group as a low coffee table, the medium (40 cm) lands at lounge-coffee height beside an armchair, the small (45 cm) reads as a side table next to a sofa.

Both are published top options. La Greca is the Greek-key border motif — more discrete, reads as a graphic frame around the top. Medusa Amplified is the Medusa medallion enlarged across the full surface — bolder, reads as a centrepiece. Choose Medusa Amplified for the large size where the motif benefits from scale, La Greca for the smaller sizes where a quieter pattern keeps the trio coherent. Or specify all three differently for an explicit graphic series.

The licensed manufacturer publishes only "available in multiple colours" — no swatch list on the public product page. The colour matrix is dealer-gated. Confirm specific motif colour combinations with us at order time; we'll request the current swatch library directly from the brand.

Polished Gold only on this family — no chrome variant published. If you need a cooler hardware register for the room's coffee-table layer, look at the La Greca coffee tables (id 408) which ship in either Satin Grey or polished Gold base, or the Medusa '95 limited-edition coffee tables which use a different base typology.
